about

This is a song against authoritarianism, be it right-wing or left-wing. It's all self-aggrandising bullshit at the expense of others and should have no place in the modern world. Once it reaches a certain threshold, the terms "right-wing" and "left-wing" become meaningless anyway. Given enough time, all left-wing dictatorships either evolve into state capitalism or collapse and capitalism takes their place. Leftism without democracy isn't really leftism at all in the long term, is it?

You might think "but Vlürch, you're like a socdem or something! you can't criticise authoritarianism OR capitalism!" and maybe you'd kinda have a point, but seeing anarchists turn into tankies and liberals turn into fascists during corona has convinced me that once you start justifying unprovoked violence and employing double standards, it doesn't matter which way you swing. Obviously I get along with libleft just fine no matter how left they go (at least for the most part), but as soon as you start accepting compromises with genocide deniers or even genocide perpetrators in the name of "left unity" or for any other reason, that's when you stop being lib-anything. Ensuring individual freedom, human rights and social progress is more important than economic details.

The title is a reference to the expansionist and nationalist ideas that were responsible for WW2 and that still plague humanity, as they always have, with flowery rhetoric being used to justify violence. It's also a reference to humans being made from clay and jinns from fire, which in this context is meant critically of "us vs them" rhetoric that authoritarians use to divide people when really the differences are lesser than the commonalities. It's intentionally vague with the word "over", so you could take it to mean that "flowers and fire" are more important than "clay and blood". In this case, the "flower" refers mainly to all the beauty of the world and life itself, which is easy to miss and take for granted and is easily destroyed by greed and violence. Then, you could also take it as a reference to Satan refusing to bow to Adam and as such using Satan as a symbol for individual freedom... but since Satan is (also) the bad guy, a further meaning would be that beautiful things and individual freedom are not always automatically good and can be used as excuses to justify oppression.

(Is it a bruh moment that I spent so much time on coming up with the song title to make it "deep" and it's just some pseudo-deep bullshit references hahaha?)

Anyway, enough about that and more about this song itself. The lyrics are pretty abstract (abstract enough that you wouldn't necessarily think they're political?), but that doesn't mean you can interpret them as pro-authoritarian. If you somehow managed to twist that interpretation out of them, you'd just be lying to yourself. You could say the reason the lyrics are in German, Russian and English is that the countries that were most involved in the second world war in Europe were Germany, the Soviet Union and the UK, but it's not really that deep; I wanted to make a song with lyrics partially in German and partially in Russian in any case, and the anti-authoritarian theme just happened.

You might cringe at the vocals, being partly straightforward blah-blah-blah, partly strained whining at the upper end of my vocal range and partly basically mumble rap. That's OK. I cringed while recording. Even with the subject matter, the number of times I had to re-record lines because I couldn't keep it up and started laughing was pretty high... but just because it's a serious political song doesn't mean I don't prioritise having fun when making music.

It might be a bit too repetitive and simple, but I kinda wanted it to have a "hypnotic" vibe. Not sure if that was at all a success, but well. There's obviously a lot of fretless bass and obviously utilising the fretlesness a lot, which I know some people find annoying, but of course this song isn't everyone's cup of tea in any case.

Usually I'd never even consider having shakers in a song, but for this one it just felt like there had to be shakers. (It's a soundfont, not real shakers, but that makes no practical difference.) Not sure why, it just sounded dull without. Maybe I should've even thrown in steel drums or something... well, whatever. Thinking about it, in terms of rhythm and vague sounds this actually turned out a lot like a song I made back in 2009 that even had a kind of similar theme. Well, this one's a lot more coherent and has significantly less shock value haha.

Maybe I should include the lyrics here since it's such a meaningful song, but nah. If you can make them out in spite of my presumably absolutely awful pronunciation, good for you. I can't guarantee that the German and Russian parts are entirely grammatically correct, either...

As for the track art, well, as you can see it's a collage of paintings of Stalin and Hitler next to each other and a painting of Death and Satan behind them (which had a woman between them but I shooped her out). Should be pretty obvious what the implication is, but in case it's not: they were both evil and the two sides of the same coin. At first I wanted to just put a single Satan between them but most Satans in old paintings are kinda goofy-looking and as soon as I saw that painting of Satan and Death fighting, it was a perfect fit without even having to change the colour scheme or anything. More broadly, the inclusion of Death and Satan implies the neverending nature of the conflict between power-hungry assholes. (You might says it's lazy to just edit together track art from old paintings, but meh.)

By the way, what genre is this? Myself, I have no idea. WEEELL, that's enough rambling.
